    Ari Levy writes:

Yahoo! Inc., after losing out to Google Inc.’s YouTube, is revamping its video site by the end of the year to include more content from media companies and Internet users.

Music videos, movie trailers, television shows and sports highlights are among the features that will be available on the new site, Mike Folgner, Yahoo’s general manager for video, said in an interview. Yahoo’s Flickr photo-sharing site will also be adding video, he said.

    Sweet!

  • 24 Hours of Flickr

24 Hours of Flickr is Today

What happens around the world in one day? In a word – life. Here on Flickr, our members are sharing the world that they see: capturing daily moments, recording history, telling stories, capturing beauty.

To celebrate this global community, we invite you to join us in “24 Hours of Flickr”, a day-long global photo project. On May 5, 2007, grab your camera and whatever else you need, and chronicle your day in pictures.

Join the “24 Hours of Flickr” group to get ready for the big day. After the big day, post your best photo to the group. We’d love to see the group photos on a map as well, so make sure you add your photos to the map using the Organizr.

Remember! We want the “24 Hours of Flickr” group to illustrate one day in the life of the Flickr community. Please do not post pictures unless they were taken on May 5, 2007. You’ll have until May 21 to add your photo.

The event will be commemorated by a companion “24 Hours of Flickr” book, which will contain a selection of photographs chosen from the group. Additionally, the group’s photos will be featured at Flickr events around the world this summer.

By adding your photo to this group, you understand that it may be selected for publication in the “24 Hours of Flickr” commemorative book and/or displayed at a Flickr-sponsored event this summer.

  • Mac Flickr Uploadr

Why haven’t they updated the Mac version of Flickr Uploadr since Oct 17th 2005? Sure there are lots of other uploaders out there but it would be really nice to have one that has some organization features as well. Weak…

  • Flickr Yahoo Login Backlash

Flickr is forcing us ‘old skool’ members to use Yahoo! accounts to login to Flickr and we’re NOT HAPPY.

I recently merged my old skool account with an old Yahoo account of mine in order to be able to use the ‘mobile site’. I eventually had to get a Flickr staff member to UN-MERGE the accounts because it was so incredibly annoying to use the merged account. Not only was it yet another login/password to remember but it was flat out cumbersome to use.

One of the main issues was that I had to constantly re-login over and over on my home computer to get to my photos on Flickr.

Also, I was being logged into a Rogers (Canadian ISP) cobranded version of the Yahoo.com site because I had a Rogers account like 2 years ago. The problem with that was the Rogers Yahoo cobranded site never worked properly! So merging the accounts actually made for a worse experience on Yahoo! as well as Flickr. I don’t even use that ISP anymore and yet I have to look at a Rogers logo every time I go to Yahoo!

I wanted to delete my Yahoo! account but then I couldn’t because I would no longer be able to use Flickr! So I had to get my accounts un-merged. What if I want to delete my Yahoo account in the future?

I’ve been nothing but supportive of Flickr from the early days when they we’re a tiny little company here in Vancouver but this is just a bad idea! So what if it’s a ‘pain’ or tedious to keep two login systems running? The friction this causes all of the original Flickr members should outweigh the ‘pain’ it causes the developers at Yahoo.

If someone asked me what photo sharing site they should use I’d no longer be inclined to just say Flickr.

If by some chance Stewart, Caterina, Heather or any of the Flickr peeps are reading this PLEASE DON’T DO THIS!

More reaction to this Flickr screw up:

    BBC.
    1700 Diggs.
    Thomas Hawk.
    Zooomr: happy to accommodate people.
    SmugMug: Offering 50% off.
Dave Winer: Flickr people are smart.

If you’re planning to bail here are some ways to get out:

FlickrDown: Download all your pics from Flickr on PC.
Englaze: Get a burn of your images.

  • Auto Forward Gmail Photo Attachments to Flickr

As you probably already know I use Flickr to manage and archive all of my images. I usually get at least one email forward from friends or family with photos in it. Instead of downloading these attachments and re-uploading them to Flickr I’ve set up a filter in Gmail to auto forward all image attachments to my upload by email flickr address. Of course I set them all to private by default.

Now whenever someone sends me photos they get saved (privately) in my Flickr. Keep in mind the Flickr upload by email feature can be flaky and isn’t designed for huge files or large numbers of files. I also do the same thing for documents and spreadsheets except I use Google Docs instead of Flickr.

  • Flickr Upload Limit Removed – Use it to Backup Your Pics

Flickr removed their 2GB/month upload limit today so now anybody use the service to backup their photos. (I guess now that Yahoo runs the Flickr tubes this is feasible)

I’ve always had this fear of losing all ~50 000 of my digital photos. I’m not very good at backing stuff up so I needed a better way to deal with this. A while back I decided I was going to upload them all to Flickr for safe keeping. I started bulk uploading photos I set the default privacy on the photos to private. Of course I hit the 2GB upload limit pretty quickly so that system wasn’t going to work.

One day I noticed Flickr stopped counting my uploads. I’m not sure what happened but I could upload as much as I wanted. So I took a few giant batches of photos and uploaded them all. My G5 chugged for 3 or 4 days and uploaded all ~50 000 of my images to Flickr.

All my images are now safely stored on Flickr’s storage facility as well as on my own machine. It’s nice not to have to worry about losing my pics.

In my opinion jUploadr seems to be the best Flickr uploader. Use that if you’re going to try this. I find the official Flickr uploader to be really flaky.

I won’t be seeing this again:
