Sweet: Apple – QuickTime – HD Gallery.

The H.264 codec is so sick.  Try watching a normal trailer after watching an HD one and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

  • There are no free searches

"Ad Age reports this week (not online, damnit) that Google is beating the big boys: Yahoo and Google’s total ad revenues this year could rival the combined prime-time ad revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC — a stunning achievement for the companies and a watershed moment [read: tipping point -ed] for the Internet as an advertising medium."

  • Silicon Valley Watcher: Exclusive interview with Google video platform director Jennifer Feikin

"Video is very complicated. We’re trying to understand which formats people are using to author their content, which formats are used for what kind of content, and how big the files are," Jennifer said. She adds that there are no time schedules in place for moving to the next phase of the project: searching, playback and purchase. To help with searching, uploaders are encouraged to provide transcripts of their content."

I told you it was just a test! The problem is that if Google actually wants to know what kind of stuff will be thrown at them then they need to let people know how the system will work.  I have content that I’d like to see available online but if Google isn’t going to tell me how the system is going to work I won’t upload anything.  Instead I’ll just wait to see what happens to the two pieces I uploaded.  On the other hand Google doesn’t even know how the system is going to work so we’ll just have to wait and see.

  • A real iPod killer

Nokia_n91This is probably the closest I’ve seen any device come to the iPod.  Not in form but in sheer this is something I could actually usedness.  This 4 GB phone from Nokia combines the two gadgets I carry around all the time.  My phone and my iPod.  Unfortunately, the software will suck and the interface will be hard to use so it’ll probably fail.

Iphone_1Question for Apple:  Where is my damn iPhone uber device thing?  Put a man on it Steve!  You’re falling behind mofo.

  • Beached Whale Bleeds to DEATH

Beached_whaleI know 24 Hours is not the best source of news but the image of that beached whale on the cover this morning really bothered me.  In the photograph the whale seems to be bleeding profusly and is floating in a pool of its own blood.  Was the whale actually bleeding?  I don’t think so!  It seems to me that the photographer had made use of the red tarp overhead (protecting the whale from the sun) to create the illusion of blood in the reflection of the water.  There is no blood in the photograph on page three.  This bothers me because the color of the tarp is not the same as the dark red blood color of the cover image.  So either it was just the shadow or some dude was busy photoshopping the image last night to make the whale look like it was in worse shape.  More blood on the whale!  More blood!  If it bleeds it leads!

Beached_whale_2_2I guess this is no surprise coming from a paper that has photographs of Britney Spears, Lucy liu, Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on PAGE TWO!  It just bugged me.  Oh, and the whale swam away when the tide came in after a team of vollies kept her cool and wet!

  • Spinners

Check out my brother’s spinner belt.  Sik!  (Quicktime 4.5 MB)  This beats spinners on a segway, spinners on a prius, spinners on a stroller, and spinners on a bike.

  • Rent or buy the Primer DVD

    Primer

    Index_05

I watched Primer last night and I highly recommend it.  When was the last time you saw a feature length film that was made for $7000 and actually enjoyed it?  Probably never.  As a person whose made some short films I know just how difficult filmmaking can be and this film is nothing short of a huge success.  All I have to say is mad props to Shane Carruth "who spent three years teaching himself filmmaking, conceived, wrote, directed, edited, and scored PRIMER and also plays one of the lead roles."  Did you like Memento?  Want to actually have to think to figure out a movie for a change?  Enough word of mouthing from me…
