  • Weekend to end breast cancer

    Cross posted from TheRadBlog.com

    FROM MY FRIEND ANDREA:

ok… so you guys should know already how much I hate group emails.
but you should also know how important fighting cancer is to me.  and in this case the latter outweighs the former and I am sending out a blanket request!

On august 19-21st Mike and I are going to be walking 60km to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Specifically it is the "Weekend to end breast cancer"

One woman I know is currently fighting breast cancer – she makes me
laugh and smile and makes going to work a joy (and that is no small
feat!) Her sister just died yesterday of the disease.  I am walking for them. I am walking for others I know who are also fighting this disease.

I am walking to raise money to help end all cancer. Please help support this journey:

  • Having A Voice

I just realized I wanted to post something and I thought about all the people it could offend. I have all these people that I worry about now when I blog. Are they my editors? In the past I would post no matter how offensive or politically charged. Does this make the site boring or mature? Is it better to be puppy dogs and ice cream or rated R?

Is it a good thing that I keep things to myself now that I would have posted in the past? Sometimes I think about the fact that what I write here that could be brought up in the most embarrassing possible situations in like 2028.

It’s also interesting to think about people I haven’t spoken to in ages who might be reading. Any old friends out there? How many closet readers are out there? (check out the style of that post)

Lots of questions about the implications of blogging in my sinus clogged noggin this morning.

  • Content from outside sources

I find it to be VERY annoying is when you put content on a site that comes from outside sources and those sources start to slow your site down.  I put that LinkLog up on the side of my site and its chugging now.  The problem is that the feed is coming from Feedroll and Feedroll is getting its feed from Del.icio.us.  So if delicious or feedroll are overwhelmed my blog loads slowly.

There is a lesson to be learned for people doing the webservice thing.  If you are going to have bloggers hawkin your services by using them on their own blogs you’d better make sure they run quickly and reliably.  Otherwise the bloggers will drop them really quickly.  Mental note: dont make stuff that runs slow, especially when it can slow other stuff down…

  • Going Home

    Gab

I had a great weekend visiting with my girlfriend’s family in Ottawa.  Highlights include the snowshoeing, the Academy Awards ballot/pool, and of course getting to see the new baby.  I tried to make my girlfriend’s little sister win the pool but her brother beat us all.  There’s a snow storm coming here tonight so it will be nice to get back to Vancity.  I’m almost better now so if I’m lucky my head won’t explode on the flight home.

    Anybody checking out the linklog?

  • Still ill

    I’m still ill

    (Antib
    iotics)
        dry mouth
            soar throat
                throbbing cranium

     must get better…

  • LinkLog

Most of the items I post on this site are just links that I think people should check out.  So I’ve decided to just use the rss feed for my Del.icio.us tag "blogworthy" as a sidebar on this site.  In other words, from now on the links I’d like to share (without commentary) will show up in the "LinkLog" on the side of this site.

How does this work?  When I see something worthy of posting I use the del.icio.us bookmarklet to post stuff to my del.icio.us feed and I simply add the tag "blogworthy" to it.  This separates my research and other unrelated material from the links I’d like to appear on this blog.  Feedroll does the actual work of displaying the del.icio.us rss feed on my TypePad blog.

This just means that I can have a link appear on my blog in two mouse clicks.

We’ll see how well it works…

Also, I disabled comments on the "gmail" related pages on the site.  I really just got fed up with people asking for accounts…  Especially when they can get the invites here.

  • Sick

Being sick sucks when you have to fly.  When your sinuses are clogged and the cabin pressure changes you feel like your head is about to explode/implode.

Sorry for not responding to phone calls, emails, voicemails…

I’m out of town and I’m ill.

  • Google Search: bad pr

My new favorite Google Search: bad pr.

    Is Apple the New Microsoft?

  • New Design Schteeze

I’m trying to hack together a new site  by doing trial and error web design.  I’m not a design person but I’m hoping to trial and error my way into a nice looking weblog.  So far css and Movable Type seem much simpler than I had imagined, at least for this type of thing…

If any of you want to see the "new design" as a "work in progress" and still quite hack, you can hop to it here.  I set this up just so I could mess around with the look until it feels right.  It’s pretty jacked right now but you get the idea of the schteeze I’m going for.  Analog, old newsprint schteeze…  Props to Bert for the idea.  Kenya Digit?

Also, check out "The Last Minute Banner Archive."  Some designs I’ve used for banner graphics on this site in the past.  Some crappy some mediocre… (Random order)

  • My blog children

These are some of the peeps who I’ve inspired to create blogs.  You could say they are my blog children.  Let us all unite in our quest to propagandize (?) the internets with our rantings!
