  • The World is not Flat TWINF

Lee Lefever has a new travel site called The World is not Flat. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with Thomas Friedman’s latest book because I know thats what you’re thinking. Over at TWINF tou can login and share your travel experiences and also keep posted on Lee’s travels. The site is pretty awesome and you should go check it out. It’s another awesome use of Drupal.

  • DomainDoorman

These assholes bought my name as a domain name.  I forgot to renew my domain so now its owned by some lameass company in Florida.  How fucked is that for a business model?  Go out and buy bulk domain names that expire and try to re-sell them to people who owned them before.  While they wait for the real owners of the domain to realize the domain expired they put a bunch of popups/popunders and spyware on the sites.  DomainDoorman two words: fuck off.

  • Some video blog stats

    Img_topfeeds_quarter

The most awesome folks at vlogmap | vlog map | video blog map and Lean Back Vids put together a list statistics for Video Blog RSS feeds using the Feedburner Awareness API.  The below statistics basically show you how many people are watching a given video blogger’s feed over the last 6 months.  I’m not a video blogger per se so I’m stoked that I’m even on the list.  I had no idea that many people we’re watching my feed.  More juicy nerdiness over at VlogMap.  These stats are limited to people who have Feedburner Awareness API thing enabled.

  • 20D Movie

Rasko Ristic in Patryk Rebisz’s Between You and Me.

The entire film Between You and Me was shot using a digital still camera (Canon 20D) in burst mode.  The film has a brilliant concept and amazing execution.  You can watch it here and read more about it here.

If the idea of shooting a movie on a Canon 20D sounds familiar you’re probably thinking of the timelapse my friend Hugh thought up back in FebruaryYou can see the one we shot here.

btw check out Hugh’s slick ass demo reel while you’re at it.

  • Go faster

Slow_downI love the visual cliché timelapse/fast motion thing.  It never gets old for me.

Check out my video blog entry #41.  The song is called Sad Piano and it’s the Charles Webster Remix.  Yeah electronic music!

  • Geocaching

Rebecca, my dad and I did a super fun thing today. We went GeoCaching! Geocaching is basically a high tech / nerd treasure hunt. You go online and get some coordinates from geocaching.com and plug them into your portable GPS. Then you go out with your gps and seek out the cache. The caches are usually some type of box or a tupperware container filled with all kinds of little goodies. You’re supposed to take one item and put one item back. Some caches are book drops. Take one book and drop another…

Once we plugged the GPS coordinates into the handheld GPS device we were ready to go. So we hopped on the seadoos and searched for the right island in the 1000 islands. My dad had some local knowledge so this helped. ;)

Once we found the island we parked our sea doos and went searching. We followed the path for a while until the gps told us to get off the path. We walked down toward the edge of a cliff and stopped. The GPS said we had arrived so we started looking. After about 30 seconds of searching we spotted the cache under some bushes. It was a little rectangular tupperware container. We took a marble out of the and put a little lighthouse christmas tree ornament thing back in it.

I was really impressed that the little gps my dad gave me (he has like 10 gps’) actually worked so well. The actual cache’s position and the coordinates on my GPS we’re only about 3 feet apart. It was some good clean nerd fun!

You can check out the cache we found here on Geocaching.com.

  • offline

i’ll be offline for a little while.

    not much action here.

in the mean time please take this survey for a little venture Bill and I are looking into.  it should only take 2 or 3 minutes.

  • Tighty Whities

My girlfriend forced me (rightfully) to go shopping the other day.  In her opinion my clothing was no longer fashionable.  I guess this is the equivalent of clothing no longer being functional to a man.

While we’re shopping we go into an Old Navy.  That places is insane.  It’s like the IKEA of clothing stores.  If you want help, you’re on your own.  I get up the cash to pay for my 2.99  tighty whities (you know it mofo) and I ask the the manager if she has any sweatshirts without logos on them.  She smirks and says  “no they always say Old Navy on them”.  I thought it was a curious response because I wasn’t trying to be funny.

Then I ask her where the clothing for Old Navy is manufactured.  She seems a bit thrown off by this question at first but she manages to blurt out “Umm, I think they’re made in Toronto but I’m not sure.”  She then tries to busy herself  to avoid any more unusual questions.   I knew she was lying because of the impossibly low prices and the fact that her face was all red.  You could almost see the “what is company policy this question” look on her face.

I say to her “I don’t think these clothes are made in Canada at these prices.”  She doesn’t respond so I ask another employee where the clothing is manufactured.  He says “I dunno.  It should be printed on the label” implying I actually don’t know to look at the label when in reality I’m just trying to see if they’re willing to say the random ultra cheap labor Asian country out loud.

He looks at the label on the shirt he’s holding and he says “Cambodia” with a surprised look on his face.  The manager immediately shoots him a dirty look.  Then he looks at me and says “I don’t think we could afford Canadian labor”.   As I’m walking out of the store I say “you’re probably right.  paying your employees fair wages tends to be more expensive.”  He smiles and I walk out the happy owner of a pair of hand crafted Cambodian undies!  I bet you don’t have Cambodian underpants!

The moral of the story is that I like to pretend I’m a socially conscious smelly hippie sometimes.  Other times I like just causing a bit of a scene because I don’t feel socially conscious/smelly enough. From now on I’m going to shop at the ultra-hipster socially conscious American Apparel because I heard pretending like you care is cool.  I heard catering to socially conscious urban hipsters with cash to burn can actually be profitable. When I got home I looked at the labels on the clothes I had just purchased.  I had three pairs of boxers all produced in different countries. Indonesia, Cambodia and India.  Can it possibly make sense to manufacture/produce the same item in three separate countries? And by the way I don’t actually wear tighty whities.
