Out Of The XBox
TIME Magazine — Out Of The XBox.
This is a great article on the Xbizzy Threesity:
( login: 16229759670 and n@a.com ) [via]"If the old Xbox looked like something recovered from a fallen asteroid—an angry, evil asteroid—this looked like something created on planet Earth, albeit a near future, slightly utopian planet Earth.
It definitely wasn’t from planet Microsoft. "We knew we had finalized it when the research came back from Japan," Moore says. "We asked people, Who do you think designed this? And they said, ‘This has to be from either Sony or Apple.’ That was the seminal moment."
Another great quote from the article:
"Let’s not miss what’s happening here. Microsoft, a company known primarily for making highly profitable business software, has put a box in your living room. It entered your house under the humble pretense of being a game machine, a toy for the kids, but it just ate your CD player and your DVD player, and it’s looking hungrily at your telephone. It’s all up in your media cabinet. It’s talking to your iPod, your digital camera, your TV, your stereo, your PC, your credit card and the Internet. It has created a miniature electronic ecosystem inside your home, with itself at the center."

Free WiFi Vancouver
Wifi Mug is a " community-run directory of free wireless cafes in and around" Vancouver.
"Vancouver has a vibrant independent cafe culture, though it’s easy to be discouraged from seeking it out. Persistent rain, boring coffee chains, and expensive wifi services leave many laptop users to dwindle in their homes and offices. This directory is an attempt to bring together all of the area’s great cafes, community spaces, and the like that offer free wireless internet. So get outside, enjoy some of Vancouver’s best wifi — not to mention its best coffee — and share in building this site with your discoveries."
Blessed are the gardeners.

Citizen Photo Journalism
I saw a bunch of Police cars and ambulances outside my window yesterday and I couldn’t quite see what they we’re doing. All I could see was that they had shut off the streets in all directions so I knew it must have been something pretty serious. I went about my day and only remembered the sirens and the Police this morning. So, on a whim I decided to see if I could find images on Flickr of the incident. Low and behold I found a set of great photographs. Apparently some old lady lost control and drove her vehicle into my local 7-Eleven. It’s interesting that I can look up photos tagged with Vancouver and find high quality images of a local event/incident taken by some random guy. Flickr is awesome, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this whole citzen media thing.

Nick Denton is featured in the New York Times.
A Blog Revolution? Get a Grip.
DON’T ask Nick Denton, publisher of Gawker Media and its growing list
of popular Web logs, about his empire. "People come up to me as if it’s
witty and say, ‘How is the empire going?’ " Mr. Denton said, "which is
pretty pathetic."Worth reading if you’re a blog nerd… [via]

"Ad Age reports this week (not online, damnit) that Google is beating the big boys: Yahoo and Google’s total ad revenues this year could rival the combined prime-time ad revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC — a stunning achievement for the companies and a watershed moment [read: tipping point -ed] for the Internet as an advertising medium."
