  • The Last Minute Zeitgeist Thingy

I made this little thing that gathers the feeds from four sites (Blogdex, Digg, Blogpulse, Del.icio.us) and puts them on one page.  The Last Minute Zeitgeist Thingy essentially tells you what us nerds are blogging about on the internets.  Go ahead, geek out you hurtin Nerd.

  • X-Ray

Xray_screencapX-Ray is the short film that my fish X-Ray starred in.  We shot it in a couple afternoons when I was in film school.  This is what the school calls a "final project" where you’re supposed to have some freedom do stuff.  What that really means is they’re too cheap to give you more 16mm film to shoot on…  Other than the BS that went on at the school this shoot was pretty fun.  It was run and gun shooting all the way!  I let the actors do some improv and have lots of  with it.  It was shot on a little PD-150 and a mini steadicam rig.

Watch it here. ~ 80 MB (big file) 8m39s

  • R.I.P. X-Ray

X made it through the night and into the morning.  He passed at around noon today.  Keep on truckin little X.

  • X

When I was in film school I made a little short film called X-Ray.  One of the stars of the film was a little Betta fish appropriately named X-Ray.  After we finished shooting I kept him as a pet.  When I got home today I noticed something strange on the floor.   I thought to myself "hmm thats odd, why is there a red leaf on the floor"?  Upon closer inspection I realized it was my little buddy X-Ray all dried up and motionless.  The first thing I thought of was that scene in Kill Bill when Bill goes:

"Is that not the perfect visual image of life and death? A fish flapping on the carpet, and a fish not flapping on the carpet. So powerful even a five-year old child with no concept of life and death knew what it meant."

Poor little X was in the "fish not flapping on the carpet" category so I grabbed a tissue and picked him up thinking I’d say a little word about how he’s been a good pet and then give him a toilet bowl burial ceremony.  Then he began to move… HE’S ALIVE!!!!  So I dropped him back into his extra large fish bowl and he immediately sank to the bottom.  I was sitting there with my nose pressed against the glass rootin for little X-Ray.  "Come on buddy you can make it!!!!"  My next thought was that he was going to drown because he breathes air!  Luckily after a couple finger taps on the glass he swam to the surface and took a breath of air.  HE MADE IT!

What a tough little bastard.  He launches himself out of his fishbowl (five feet off the ground) lands on the carpet and sits there drying up and about to die and yet he still manages to survive!  I don’t know if he’ll ever be the same but he’s alive.  If only I knew why he tried to commit suicide.  Maybe he needs some new food.

  • Weekend to end breast cancer

    Cross posted from TheRadBlog.com

    FROM MY FRIEND ANDREA:

ok… so you guys should know already how much I hate group emails.
but you should also know how important fighting cancer is to me.  and in this case the latter outweighs the former and I am sending out a blanket request!

On august 19-21st Mike and I are going to be walking 60km to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Specifically it is the "Weekend to end breast cancer"

One woman I know is currently fighting breast cancer – she makes me
laugh and smile and makes going to work a joy (and that is no small
feat!) Her sister just died yesterday of the disease.  I am walking for them. I am walking for others I know who are also fighting this disease.

I am walking to raise money to help end all cancer. Please help support this journey:

  • Ant behavior vs Blog behavior

There’s a really fascinating post over at TheRadBlog.com about ants.  I find ant behavior to be really fascinating because I think the blogosphere sort of mirrors the emergent, organic, and swarming nature of ant behavior.

    Bloggers : Ants
Interesting stuff on the weeb/News : Food
    Links : Pheromones

You can figure out the rest…

Update: Upon doing some googling I realized that this was of course not an original idea.  Damn!  I thought I was being clever…  (It’s not working out at all)

"Foraging ants can get trapped in a circle with each ant following the
ant in front of it along a circular pheremone trail. The ants will not
deviate from the trail even as they starve to death. What are the risks
and challenges involved in keeping collective intelligence from
    becoming collective idiocy
    ?"

    Echo Chamber much?  Um yeah…

  • I just like the way it sounds.

Rap_traxx_goofyI’ve always been into hip hop.  I just like the way it sounds.  What can I say?  The first CD I ever owned was Rap Traxx 2 and it was a SAWEET.  Does listening to Hip Hop mean I buy into
the culture of violence that represents a certain part of the hip hop scene? No.  I just like the sound.  My mom hates those "rap punkers" and rightfully so.  She hears the swearing and all the BS that surrounds hip hop but she doesn’t just listen.  I don’t think she has a Sub that can pound good enough.  You know how it is.  Or maybe its just a generational thing!?

If you want highbrow music you should stick to the classics.  Or you can be fascinated by how hip hop has led to entirely new forms of music like mash-ups.  DJ Dangermouse took Jay-z’s The Black Album and mixed it with The Beatles White Album to create the Grey Album.  The Grey Album (although entirely illegal) is probably one of my favorite albums of all time.  Now, without the hip hop influence this album would never have been created.  How can you not get into this track

All I can say is that my simple brain likes a bumpin baseline and a good rhyme now and then. If people are dumb enough to buy into the culture of degrading women and violence then we have more important questions to ask such as: Why are these folks ignorant enough to believe this stuff in the first place?

The_gameFor me personally it’s like how can you not enjoy this new album by The Game?  Just look at the cover, its this huge black dude puttin out the vibe by sittin on some sweet rims.  Those aren’t just any rims either, they’re gangster rims of the El Camino/Impala low rider breed.  This type of rim gives you tons of street cred.  It means you’re most likely carrying a 9mm or a Gatt and you’re ready to do a driveby.  He’s also rockin some blingin chains so he must be rockin the big bank roll.  The tats he has denotes a high probability of prior incarceration, also adding to his gangster vibe.  All of this adds to his image and I think its funny to decode it all.  I mean for real though, isn’t this what MTV tells me life’s all about?  He who has the biggest/baddest rims you’ve ever seen wins

I plan on driving a hybrid when I get my next car.  Does this mean I don’t buy into the hype?  I don’t know what that means or even how its related but I still want spinners on my Prius.  I’m gonna lower it too.  So watch out Yaletown, I’m gonna be doin drivebys at the local Starfucks.  Watch yoself fool.

I was bummed to see my friend Patty’s new car didn’t have spinners on it.  All he’s got is a Montreal Canadians license plate and a hoola girl on the dash.  What kind of street cred is that going to get you in Compton Patrick?

    Peep the game.
