  • Beached Whale Bleeds to DEATH

Beached_whaleI know 24 Hours is not the best source of news but the image of that beached whale on the cover this morning really bothered me.  In the photograph the whale seems to be bleeding profusly and is floating in a pool of its own blood.  Was the whale actually bleeding?  I don’t think so!  It seems to me that the photographer had made use of the red tarp overhead (protecting the whale from the sun) to create the illusion of blood in the reflection of the water.  There is no blood in the photograph on page three.  This bothers me because the color of the tarp is not the same as the dark red blood color of the cover image.  So either it was just the shadow or some dude was busy photoshopping the image last night to make the whale look like it was in worse shape.  More blood on the whale!  More blood!  If it bleeds it leads!

Beached_whale_2_2I guess this is no surprise coming from a paper that has photographs of Britney Spears, Lucy liu, Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on PAGE TWO!  It just bugged me.  Oh, and the whale swam away when the tide came in after a team of vollies kept her cool and wet!

  • Spinners

Check out my brother’s spinner belt.  Sik!  (Quicktime 4.5 MB)  This beats spinners on a segway, spinners on a prius, spinners on a stroller, and spinners on a bike.

  • How will you look in 40 years?

    Look at this photo:

    Me_original

Now look at me as a geezer:

    Me_as_a_geezer

Freaky isn’t it!?  Want to see what you’ll look like as a geezer?

    Check it out. [via] [via]

  • Rent or buy the Primer DVD

    Primer

    Index_05

I watched Primer last night and I highly recommend it.  When was the last time you saw a feature length film that was made for $7000 and actually enjoyed it?  Probably never.  As a person whose made some short films I know just how difficult filmmaking can be and this film is nothing short of a huge success.  All I have to say is mad props to Shane Carruth "who spent three years teaching himself filmmaking, conceived, wrote, directed, edited, and scored PRIMER and also plays one of the lead roles."  Did you like Memento?  Want to actually have to think to figure out a movie for a change?  Enough word of mouthing from me…

Read the story of how the film was made.  Watch the trailer.  Buy the DVD.  In that order mofos.

  • Social Bookmarking is really interesting.

There’s so much to read and so much to learn on the inkernets.  Of course there’s also plenty of crap to make you dumber.  I see social bookmarking as a way to let other people filter the weeb for you.  There’s a bunch of social bookmarking applications out there but I prefer Del.icio.us.

It’s quite fascinating because if you’re interested in "do it yourself" stuff then you can just subscribe to the DIY tag:
    http://del.icio.us/tag/diy

Or you can subscribe to the rss feed:
    http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/diy

Now anytime somebody tags a link with DIY you’ll be able to check it out.  For example, when I fired up my feedreader this morning I learned how to make fire from a candy bar and a pop can.  Given my interest in weird little hacks like this I found it to be quite interesting.  That’s just one weakass example.  With delicious you can subscribe to any number tags like fashion, gadgets, nerds, football, poetry, insomnia, or whatever  floats your boat.  Chances are there is some obsessed nerd who is far more interested in the  subject matter than you are.

Once you’ve figured out tags, in delicious you can start combining tags as well.  Interested in blogs? What about cool blogs?

    http://del.icio.us/tag/cool+blog

    Cool design?
    http://del.icio.us/tag/cool+design

    You get the idea.

What if you don’t want to subscribe to a certain subject but rather you’d like to subscribe to someone else’s judgment?  I trust that pretty much anything my brother puts into his feed will be interesting to me.  Just as I trust his judgment on picks for music and movies I trust his taste in links.  It’s like a micro recommendation engine.  For example, Matt Haughey is a super tech nerd and he’s brilliant, so I’ll subscribe to his feed because he’ll find interesting things for me to read.  Other intersting feeds are  Clay Shirky, Jon Udell, Make Magazine etc…

  • The Pope’s Domain Name
