  • The power of blogs

The power of blogs?  Hmm lets see if they have teeth:

Remember the Sinclair Broadcast Group?  Well the people at this network are planning on airing a piece of anti-Kerry propaganda the night before the election.  Bloggers are saying fuck that!  This is propaganda NOT NEWS and we will not stand for it!  Bloggers have taken to calling companies that advertise on the Sinclair stations and saying we’re not going to buy your products when you advertise with these schmucks…  Seems to be working.  Hit them where it counts, the bottom line.  Want to take action?  Try here too…  Contact the local companies that advertise with them and speak with the Sales Manager.  Tell him/her how you aren’t going to buy your car from them anymore if they continue to advertise with Sinclair.  Is this just rumors on the internets? No!

Will this be another victory for the blogosphere?  More on this:

    Or email Sinclair’s CEO: dsmith@sbgnet.com

    Or Contact the FCC

What are other bigidybloggers sayin about this Sinclair Fiasco?

An FCC commissioner has already denounced this piece:

    Drudge:

"FCC COMMISSIONER COPPS CRITICIZES SINCLAIR CORPORATE DECISION TO PREEMPT LOCAL STATIONS FOR POLITICAL BROADCAST

Commissioner Michael J. Copps reacted to reports that Sinclair Broadcast Group will preempt more than 60 local stations across the country to air an overtly political program in the days prior to the Presidential election.

Copps stated: “This is an abuse of the public trust.  And it is proof positive of media consolidation run amok when one owner can use the public airwaves to blanket the country with its political ideology — whether liberal or conservative.  Some will undoubtedly question if this is appropriate stewardship of the public airwaves. This is the same corporation that refused to air Nightline’s reading of our war dead in Iraq.  It is the same corporation that short-shrifts local communities and local jobs by distance-casting news and weather from hundreds of miles away.  It is a sad fact that the explicit public interest protections we once had to ensure balance continue to be weakened by the Federal Communications Commission while it allows media conglomerates to get even bigger.  Sinclair, and the FCC, are taking us down a dangerous road.”

  • Kerry wins again…

“President Bush smirked and winked and chuckled to himself. He jumped from his stool, chopped at the air and interrupted the debate moderator. As he fought to keep his emotions in check in a testy, personal debate with Sen. John Kerry, the president asserted, ‘That answer almost made me scowl.’” [AP, 10/8/04]

    KERRY WINS

Mort Kondracke: “… I think Kerry won this debate as he won the first debate I don’t think… I thought that Kerry was much more aggressive and the president was basically on the defense and didn’t have new arguments didn’t have…wasn’t as facile as he should have been.” [Fox News Channel, 10/8/04]

Bill Kristol: “I guess I think if you think the President was doing okay and didn’t need a win in this debate, he did fine, but I think, if one thinks that Bush missed an awful lot of opportunities to go after Kerry in the first debate he had to make some of them up in this debate, I’m not sure he really succeeded in doing so.” [Fox New Channel, 10/8/04]

Brit Hume: “Is it now fair to say that in each of these debates in terms of marshaling arguments, and remembering them and presenting them that this is something John Kerry has proved he is very good at. And that it doesn’t play to the president’s strong suit.” [Fox News Channel, 10/8/04]

Mort Kondracke: “I thought [Kerry] was very effective. I thought that he was also on the attack a lot and frankly I thought that the President seemed to be on the defense a lot and trying to explain things and not explaining them all that well.” [Fox News Channel, 10/8/04]

Tim Russert: “John Kerry, also, energetic, forceful.” [NBC, 10/8/04]

“On the question of whether Bush did everything he needed to tonight, I don’t think so. I think he helped himself, but Kerry leaves these debates energized.” [Jonah Goldberg, National Review Online, 10/8/04]

    KERRY’S STRONT POINTS

Mark Shields: “He just absolutely, I thought, demolished the President’s claims about the coalition in Iraq.” [PBS, 10/8/04]

James Fallows, Atlantic Monthly: [Kerry’s best moment] “I think his best moment was at the series of new lines. Again like this Missouri line of saying that that I was able to do with some of my votes in the Senate what you have failed to do, which is balance the budget, so I think it was the general vividness of his approach.” [CBS, 10/8/04]

Perry Bacon: “I actually was struck that Kerry was pretty strong, I thought, in the foreign policy section, actually, and sort of hit the president hard on that.” [CNN, 10/8/04]

Eventually you’ll all have your PVR’s hooked up to the weeb and they’ll download the latest and greatest material overnight via rss feeds and bittorrent. Until that moment you’ll have to suffer through manually downloading videos and watching them at postage stamp size. To keep your Quicktime needs fulfilled I have some juicy videoage to serve up today.

Video blog entry # 0017 must have been the inspiration for Michel Gondry’s latest video entitled Behind for Lacquer. You know, cause Gondry peruses my blog daily… The difference between Gondry’s video and 0017 is that 0017 was shot on a 1 megapixel digital camera and Gondry’s latest looks like a real film timelapse. Oh and also Gondry is a genius and this video is on the bleeding edge of mediocrity. This drive from Montreal (Canada sti caulice) to Florida took like 22 hours of non stop driving for me and a buddy. We just up and decided to hit the road one night before spring break. The trip was most awesome.

A couple of other music videos you can d/l. Eminem’s new Lose It (torrent don’t bother clickin if ya dont know what that is) video and Kanye West’s Workout Video.

For something with a little more bite you should watch the slick motion graphics and “radical” politics in Knife Party’s “What Barry Says“. Its very hiphopera. That otta do ya fine fer now eh. eh.

REALITY: There is more that we could do to improve security in the homeland

Bush Has Allowed Airline Security Gaps To Persist, Threatening Our Safety.Under Bush’s management, TSA has failed to develop a comprehensive strategy to identify security weaknesses at commercial airports despite spending $10.7 Billion on aviation security measures. Less than 5% of air cargo is ever screened for explosives, baggage screeners continue to use, error-prone approaches, and there’s a shortage of qualified screeners. DHS Inspector General, Clark Kent Ervin admitted that the TSA screeners and privately contracted workers perform “about the same, which is to say, equally poorly.” An internal DHS investigation revealed that “[u]ndercover investigators were able to sneak explosives and weapons past security screeners at 15 airports.” What’s more, Air Marshals fly on less than 5% of flights while Bush sought to scale back funding. [National Journal, 6/09/04; The Hill, 4/30/03; House Select Committee on Homeland Security; Dallas Morning News 9/9/04; Telegraph, 7/23/04; Union Leader, 4/23/04; AP, 6/01/04; USA Today 9/23/04]

America still Vulnerable Because Terrorist Watch Lists Are Not Fully Accessible Or Integrated. According to news accounts, the terrorist aviation list only includes those who pose a danger to aviation. The federal ‘No-fly’ list still includes only suspected terrorists ‘who pose threats to civil aviation’ – not all suspected terrorists. “It’s just plain wrong,” said 9/11 Commissioner Slade Gorton. “The potential consequences are that terrorists can still get on aircraft in the United States.” On 9/11, only a dozen names were on the ‘No-fly’ list. Now there are about 3,500 names, only a fraction of more than 300,000 on the government’s main list of terror suspects.’ Those people could be couriers, operatives, or suicide bombers. “It doesn’t matter. You have to keep them all off [the list]” said terrorism expert Roger Cressey. [MSNBC, ‘No-fly’ list still lacking, 9/23/04 – citing Department of Homeland Security – Office of Inspector General. “DHS Challenges in Consolidating Terrorist Watch List Information.” OIG-04-31. KERRY PLAN: John Kerry Will Step Up Aviation Security By Improving Screening of Cargo and Passengers for Explosives. In our airports, we’ll install the equipment to check passengers for explosives and to screen cargo just like we screen baggage. Instead of the current “Known Shipper” program, which screens a tiny fraction of the cargo on passenger planes, the Kerry-Edwards plan will significantly improve the screening of cargo carried on passenger planes. Instead of the current system, which essentially allows for spot checks of the highest-risk cargo, the new system will enable the screening of cargo like we screen bags. Their plan will provide for the development of the technology needed to make such screening feasible, as well as the personnel hiring needed to achieve it. The plan will also undertake additional security improvements that experts have called for, such as tightening background checks for employees of carriers.
