Duncan Rawlinson photographed this scene in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. A pale birch with sparse orange and yellow foliage occupies the center of a small clearing. Dark green leaves and branches in the foreground create a natural window into the scene. Behind the birch, conifers and maples in various stages of autumn color fill the mid-ground, while a forested hillside rises in the distance. The clearing floor is covered in dry grasses and low shrubs, typical of the park’s mixed woodland terrain. Soft, even light reveals the range of color without harsh shadows.
