Hill Island Tip in Winter Ice

Hill Island Tip in Winter Ice

Duncan Rawlinson photographed the northern tip of Hill Island from above during winter in Ontario’s Thousand Islands region. Fresh snow blankets the small landmass while frost clings to bare trees and low shrubs along the rocky shore. The surrounding St. Lawrence River shows a patchwork of solid ice sheets and open water channels, their boundaries marked by irregular fracture lines and pressure ridges. The overhead perspective compresses the scene into white, blue-gray, and dark tones, documenting the seasonal freeze that grips this inland archipelago. The high-contrast textures reveal how ice advances across the river, leaving isolated pockets of liquid water between frozen plates.
