Duncan Rawlinson photographed this small rocky island from above in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada. Bare branches and dormant grasses spread across the outcrop, their pale pink and tan hues set against the cool, transparent water. The aerial vantage flattens the scene into an almost abstract arrangement of textures and muted tones. Frost or early growth gives the vegetation a ghostly, bleached appearance. The still water reflects diffused light, holding the island in a minimal frame that marks the slow shift from cold months toward warmer days.
