Snowfall Over Open Water

Snowfall Over Open Water

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this view of the Thousand Islands region in Ontario, Canada, showing snow falling over unfrozen river water. White’s Island, Otis Island, and Middle Huckleberry Island appear through the gray winter weather, their snow-dusted trees and structures visible across the open water. The lavender-gray sky and cold water create a subdued atmosphere. Diagonal streaks of snow cross the frame, adding movement to the otherwise still scene. The photograph captures a moment of transition, when the river remains liquid despite the cold and the islands wait under winter weather.
