Fiery Maple Canopy in Fall

Fiery Maple Canopy in Fall

Duncan Rawlinson photographed this maple canopy in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, Canada, during October 2019 at the height of fall color. The frame is packed with maple leaves in red, orange, and yellow, their saturation intensified by natural afternoon light. Shallow depth of field renders the background into a soft wash of warm tones while keeping the foreground leaves sharp against glimpses of blue sky. The composition isolates the foliage from the ground, concentrating entirely on the color and structure of the deciduous canopy. This is a real photograph of an eastern Ontario autumn, where the forests deliver a dependable annual display of color.
